Attendance
Attendance at Pitt Academy & RISE
Regular attendance is critical for earning course credit. Here are the most important points from the Pitt County Schools attendance policy that you need to know.
Earning Course Credit (Grades 9-12)
To receive credit for a high school course, students must follow attendance rules.
-
A student who is absent for 8 or more periods in a course may fail that course.
-
Students with 8 to 15 absences who are passing the course may be given a chance to make up time, at the principal's discretion.
-
A student cannot appeal at the school level if they are absent more than 15 periods in a course.
Lawful vs. Unlawful Absences
-
Lawful (Excused) Absences: These are for reasons like illness, medical appointments, death in the family, or court proceedings. While still counted as an absence, students must be allowed to make up missed work.
-
Unlawful (Unexcused) Absences: This is any absence not covered by the "lawful" list. For unlawful absences, the principal has the discretion to decide if a student can make up missed work or tests.
Submitting Absence Notes
-
Parents must notify the school of the reason for every absence.
-
You must provide appropriate documentation (like a doctor's note) for an absence to be considered lawful.
-
Absences for things like educational opportunities or religious observances should be approved by the principal before the student is absent.
Definition of "Present"
To be counted as "present" for the school day, a student must be in attendance for at least one-half of the instructional day.
